Arlington and Alexandria and closest to DC. Fairfax County, the largest, is both inside and outside the beltway. Loudoun County and Prince William County are outside the beltway. Home prices inside the beltway are generally higher than outside the beltway.

This map shows the additional counties starting from Arlington (closest to
Washington DC) and extending out west and south. The western counties are mostly
rural, but there are some fairly large cities. Warren and Clarke Counties are
near the Shenandoah Mountains. Spotsylvania is down south near Richmond.
